Welcome to Sideline Spin, a blog dedicated to exploring the world of sports public relations and the strategies that influence how we experience sports both on and off the field. From global events to viral moments, this blog focuses on how messaging, media, and storytelling shape the way audiences connect with athletes, teams and organizations.
As an student at the University of Oregon, I’m surrounded by a strong sports culture where football and basketball are a major part of our campus life. Game days, team branding and fan engagement are constant reminders of how communication plays a role in shaping school spirit and audience connection. Being in this environment has made me more aware of how sports are not only played, but also presented and experienced.
My interest in sports public relations has also been shaped by personal experience. This past summer while studying abroad in London, I had the opportunity to attend Wimbledon—the world’s oldest and most prestigious tennis tournament—there, I saw firsthand how a major international sporting event is carefully managed and communicated. From their selective sponsorship visibility to media coverage and audience engagement, every detail contributed to a larger strategic narrative.
My purpose with Sideline Spin is to explore these behind-the-scenes strategies. Throughout this blog, I will analyze how public relations and communications professionals build narratives, manage reputations, and adapt to a constantly evolving media landscape. I’m especially interested in the influence of current social and political conversations on sports communication. For example, the controversy surrounding the U.S. men’s hockey team during this year’s Winter Olympics shows how politics, media framing, and public opinion can shape how teams are perceived. Sports public relations often extends beyond promotion and into navigating complex public conversations.
I’m also excited to look at the growing intersection between sports, entertainment, and pop culture, and the impact this overlap has on how teams and athletes engage with audiences. For example, how NHL teams have leveraged the popularity of the hockey-themed romantic television series “Heated Rivalry” in their social media and marketing strategies. Social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram have made it easier for teams to build narratives that extend far beyond the game itself, influencing both viewership and fan loyalty.
Through Sideline Spin, I hope to better understand the role of public relations in shaping sports as both a competitive and cultural space, while also developing my own voice as a future public relations professional.
